      Producer Information

Champagne Joseph Perrier is a family-owned Champagne house in Châlons-en-Champagne, the capital of the Marne. It was founded by Joseph Perrier in a former coaching inn in 1825. The business flourished quickly, especially in overseas markets. In 1888 Paul Pithois took the reins and ran the business untill 1925, when his sons took over. In 1980 Jean-Claude Fourmon succeeded his uncle Georges Pithois, Paul's grandson. In turn his son Benjamin Fourmon is the CEO today. The estate vineyards are located above the river on the northern slopes of the Vallé de la Marne in the Châlons-en-Champagne commune. They cover around 23 hectares (57 acres), satisfying about 30 percent of total production needs. The chalky soils here are well-suited to the classic Champagne varieties, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The vines are tended to and picked by hand, and the wines are handled by traditional methods, including manual riddling. Joseph Perrier's cellars, which date back to Roman times, extend almost three kilometers (2 miles) into the chalk hills. They do not extend deeply underground and benefit from chimneys allowing light in and air to circulate.
