      Producer Information

Domaine François Villard is a well-regarded French wine producer located in the northern Rhône. The estate's first vines were planted in Condrieu in 1989, and today the domaine produces almost 30 different red and white wines from Rhône appellations including Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Peray and Cornas. However, it is best known for its Viognier wines from Condrieu and its Syrahs from Côte-Rôtie. The estate boasts several parcels of vines in Condrieu, and a few hectares in Saint-Joseph and Côte Rôtie. Syrah and Viognier dominate the domaine's vineyard holdings, but François Villard also sources fruit to produce wines from Merlot, Marsanne and Roussanne. François Villard produces dry and sweet styles of Condrieu, and often adds a small percentage of Viognier to his Syrah. One of the domaine's top wines, La Brocarde, can contain up to 13 percent Viognier, depending on the vintage. Grapes for this wine are produced from 20-year-old vines planted in the Côte Blonde vineyard in Côte Rôtie. Around 35 percent of the fruit is left to ferment whole-cluster, and the wine ages for 18 months in 80-100 percent new French oak barrels. Around 1200 bottles of La Brocarde are produced annually. Owner François Villard was a chef before he got into winemaking. He learned much of his craft from well-known Rhône producer Yves Cuilleron.
