Producer Information
Il Marroneto is a wine producer based in Montalcino, in Italy's Tuscany region. It was founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Mori, and today makes three wines from Sangiovese – two Brunello di Montalcino wines and a Rosso di Montalcino. The Mori family's winery started out as two small rooms that had once been used as drying rooms for chestnuts ("marrone" is a local name for chestnuts) – hence the name of the winery. The original wine cellars date back to 1246 and were expanded in the 1990s by Alessandro Mori, Giuseppe's son, and Il Marroneto's current proprietor. Originally, the estate was supplied by a tiny 0.3 hectares (0.7 acres) of vineyard planted in 1975. Today, the vineyards extend over the mineral-rich, coarse sand soils that lead up to the hilltop town of Montalcino. The slopes face north and reach heights of approximately 1150ft (350m) above sea level.
