The aromatics alone are worth the price of entry on the 2017 Altesino Montosoli. A dazzling display is revealed as this opens like a basket of freshly picked flowers with ripe strawberries, cloves and a hint of plum sauce that adds gravitas. Its elegance is nicely matched by a balanced inner sweetness, as mineral-tinged red berries are contrasted by hints of sour citrus and savory spice. Fine tannins mount, yet are almost imperceptible until the finish, where notes of blood orange mingle with licorice and inner rose.

      Producer Information

Societa Agricola Altesino is a leading estate in Montalcino, Tuscany, particularly known for its Brunello wines. Its Montosoli expression was one of the first "cru" (single-vineyard) wines released in Italy when it was introduced in 1975. The company produces a range of wines. The generic Brunello di Montalcino is aged for four years with a minimum of two years in large Slavonian oak casks, with five and three years for the Riserva. The Montosoli wine spends at least two years in casks plus three to four months in French barriques (four years aging in the cellar in total). Their Rosso di Montalcino receives eight months in Slavonian oak. Palazzo Altese IGT Toscana is 100-percent Sangiovese, made with partial carbonic maceration. Other wines include Alte d'Altesi and Rosso di Altesino, both blends of Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot; the Bianco di Altesino from Vermentino, Chardonnay and Viognier; and a Vin Santo from Trebbiano and Malvasia.
