Roots Run Deep is a high-profile Napa Valley wine company founded in 2005, known for producing wines under the labels Educated Guess and Hypothesis. Proprietor and wine industry veteran Mark Albrecht created the company with the goal to produce Napa Valley-designate wines at affordable prices and works with growers to receive fruit from some of the valley's esteemed sub-regions including Oak Knoll, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena and Carneros. Roots Run Deep produces varietal Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines under the label Educated Guess, and a reserve Cabernet Sauvignon under the label Hypothesis. Rather than owning and managing its own vineyards, Roots Run Deep purchases the fruit necessary to produce these wines. The company has forged long-term relationships with well known growers such as the Sangiacomo family, farmers in Sonoma since 1927 – the company's sole source for Carneros Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It also sources fruit from, among others, the famed Beckstoffer property, George III, in Rutherford. Educated Guess Cabernet Sauvignon, produced primarily with Napa Valley fruit, is the company's first release and flagship wine. It ages 12 months in French oak and is typically blended with small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The company's reserve wine, Hypothesis, also a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, is produced by the winemaking technique Flash Détente. With this method, prior to fermentation the grapes are quickly superheated and cooled, causing the grapes to rupture, adding additional color, flavor and tannin to the juice. The wine is barrel-fermented and ages 18 months in French oak barrels.
