      Producer Information

The Royal Tokaji Company is a relatively recent addition to the ranks of Tokaj producers, having been founded in the Hungarian village of Mád in 1990. The winery was established by acclaimed UK wine writer Hugh Johnson, alongside fellow UK wine trade veteran Ben Howkins and Anglo-Danish winemaker Peter Vinding-Diers. At the time, Johnson believed the region was not meeting its full potential as a wine producing area. Now, it is one of the most famous producers in the region. The range of wines produced at the estate spans a dry Furmint to minute quantities of the luscious – and rare – Essencia. Produced from the most concentrated, botrytis-affected berries, Essencia can be fermented for up to eight years, resulting in a wine with less than three percent alcohol and sugar levels reaching up to 85 percent on any given year.
