Producer Information
Cavaliere d'Oro (also known as Castello di Gabbiano) is a historic wine producer of Tuscany, dating back to the 10th Century. It produces a range of classic wines under the Chianti and Chianti Classico DOCGs, and its vineyards are focused largely on Sangiovese. The cellars first began construction in 1124, and were owned by one of the leading banking families in the province, the Bardi. In the 15th Century, the castle passed into the possession of the important and politically influential Soderini family. After being labelled rebels by the ruling Medici family in the 16th Century, the Soderini fled and left the castle abandoned until the 17th Century. Today, the estate encompasses approximately 150 hectares (371 acres) of vineyard land. The majority is dedicated to the growth of Sangiovese, although a range of other grape varieties are grown, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Colorino and Malvasia. Sangiovese forms the basis of Gabbiano's DOCG wines, which includes a Chianti Classico Riserva wine, as well as the standard forms. Gabbiano also makes a sweet Vin Santo, and a range of Toscana IGT wines. As of 2018, Castello di Gabbiano and the Cavaliere d Oro brand is within the Treasury Wine Estate portfolio.
