2019 | Tenuta delle Terre Nere | Feudo di Mezzo Etna Rosso

Red Wine: 2019 | Tenuta delle Terre Nere | Feudo di Mezzo Etna Rosso

A powerful Etna red with plenty of black-cherry and licorice character, plus a robust tannin structure. However, it also has a very exciting, cool and bright side, which comes out ever more clearly at the long, racy finish.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Enthusiast: Dark spice, new leather, wild berry and eucalyptus are some of the aromas you'll find on this lovely red. Sleek and sultry, the elegant palate offers Marasca cherry, raspberry, cedar and star anise alongside lithe, fine-grained tannins.
        • Wine Spectator: This charming red is well-balanced and fresh, firmed by fine-grained tannins and displaying a deftly woven range of wild strawberry and black raspberry, Earl Grey tea, rosehip, minerally stone and spice.

        Producer Information

Tenuta delle Terre Nere is a Sicilian wine estate that cultivates vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna. It is known for its high average vine age, including pre-phylloxera vines from which it makes exclusively DOC Etna wines. The flagship of the wine portfolio is the Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino. First released in 2006, it is a Nerello Mascalese-dominat blend with small portions of Nerello Capuccio. Prior to release, it is barrel-aged in French barriques for 16 to 18 months and is named after the winemaker who tended the vineyard for more than seven decades. Tenuta delle Terre Nere also porduces a range of Etna Bianco wines predominantly from Carricante, Catarratto, Inzolia and Grecanico. On top of this, the portfolio includes a range of single-vineyard wines that are produced from the highest-quality grapes of individual plots of the estate. Terre Nere's vineyards encompass 55 hectares (135 acres) in four different subregions across the island. Altitude here ranges from 1960 to 3280 feet (600 to1000m) above sea level, creating steep slopes within an undulating landscape. The steepest gradients are closely terraced and require manual farming practices. Many vines are approaching 100 years old with a handful of plots over 130 years having been planted prior to the phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th Century.
