Producer Information
Franciscan Estate lies in the Oakville appellation of Napa Valley in California. It is particularly known for red wines from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety. Established in 1973, Franciscan is now owned by E&J Gallo. The first vintage of Franciscan was produced in 1975 by Justin Meyer, who was famous for being the winemaker at Silver Oak Winery. The winery grew to a thriving, successful business, thanks to the help of vintner Agustin Huneeus, owner of Quintessa Winery. The company now holds 240 acres (97 hectares) of land within the Oakville appellation, as well as contracts with several other appellations in southern Napa Valley including, Yountville, Oak Knoll, Mount Veeder, and Carneros. While the flagship Magnificat Cabernet Sauvignon blend is what the company is most famous for, it should be noted that Franciscan Estate was the first winery in Napa Valley to produce a 100-percent wild yeast-fermented Chardonnay.
