Distillery Information
Absolut Vodka is one of the largest spirit brands in the world. The vodka brand is well-known for its flavored versions, including Citron, Kurant and Pepper. Many of these have achieved high ratings in international spirit competitions. Absolut is particularly known for its marketing, which incorporates tie-ins with the arts (most notably Andy Warhol) and the music and film industries. Advertising based around its distinctive bottle shape began around 1980 and is widely regarded as one of the longest-running advertising campaigns in history. The range is produced in Åhus, southern Sweden, where the company was established in 1879 to make Absolut Rent Brännwein – the word vodka did not appear in Sweden until the late 1950s. Founder Lars Olsson Smith was a teetotaller, but saw an opportunity to produce high-quality spirits from the area's abundant wheat fields. Absolut appeared on shelves in its modern form in 1979. Today, annual production is approximately 100 million liters. In 2008, Pernod Ricard bought Absolut from the Swedish state alcohol monopoly, which had owned the brand since 1917.
