      Producer Information

Barefoot Cellars is a California producer offering a large selection of value-driven wines. The history of Barefoot begins with garage wines in the 1960s with the name reflecting the manual practice of crushing grapes by stomping on them. Barefoot Cellars officially came into being in 1986, when it was established by Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey, along with the creation of the iconic footprint label. The company launched with two varieties, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Barefoot slowly added new varieties as demand increased and in 1996, achieved coast-to-coast distribution in the United States. Barefoot now offers more than 30 wines in a range of still, sparkling, rosé, sweet and dry styles. It covers the most popular varieties including, but not limited to, Merlot, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and a number of proprietary blends. Most of the wines carry the broad California appellation designation and a producedin an easy-to-drink style with residual sugar. The company has embraced multiple packaging innovations for wine including boxed-wine, tetra paks and wine-in-a-can to accomodate to a broad range of consumers. In 2005, the company was bought by the international beverage giant E & J Gallo, who further increased the scale of production. Barefoot is often considered one of the largest wine brands in the world, with annual production averaging around 21 million cases.
