"Caol Ila (pronounced "Cull Eela"), meaning "Sound of Islay," was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, becoming a large Islay producer known for its smoky, peaty whisky, essential to Johnnie Walker blends. After changing hands, it was acquired by DCL (now Diageo) and rebuilt in 1972 to triple capacity, later expanding further, maintaining its remote setting on Islay's rugged east coast while modernizing production with large stills and concrete construction, all while preserving its distinct smoky character."
