"Caol Ila was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson on Islay's eastern coast, taking its name from the Gaelic "Sound of Islay". The distillery has had a long and varied history, with multiple ownership changes, including a temporary closure during World War II, and a major reconstruction in 1972 that increased its production capacity significantly."
