He became interested in the health and refreshing properties of mint, so he invented a pure, clear and refined white mint liqueur, which he immediately put to the test, offering guests at the Grand Hotel as a relief against the heatwave. An instant success, Émile turned the pharmacy into a distillery and named his liqueur Menthe-Pastille after the tiny mint candies that were very popular at the time. Five generations later, the family business still bears the GIFFARD name and proudly maintains the high quality standards instilled by its original creator.
