Distillery Information

Glen Moray is a Single Malt distillery in Elgin in the Speyside region of Scotland, known for approachable, smooth fruity whiskies. Despite the spelling, the name is pronounced like the surname Murray. In 1897, the Elgin West Brewery which had made ales since 1830, was transformed into the Glen Moray whisky distillery. The spirit was aged in an unusual range of oak barrels for the time, including Marsala and Sherry casks. After a short spell out of action during the First World War, the distillery was bought in 1920 by the wines and spirits merchant Macdonald & Muir. During the 1950s a nearby farm was bought to ensure the supply of barley. In addition two new copper stills were installed in a new still house, new malting facilities were added, and the facility was upgraded from coal to oil power. This allowed output to be doubled. In 1987 production moved to seven days per week, reaching two million liters of spirit per year.
