Distillery Information
Glenfiddich is the world's biggest-selling single malt whisky. Distilled in Dufftown, Moray of Scotland, it was one of the first brands to be marketed as a single malt. It was founded in Dufftown in 1886 by William Grant, who built the distillery by hand, with the help of his nine children. The first spirit ran off the stills on Christmas Day in 1887. The introduction of Prohibition in the US in 1920 was disastrous for most distilleries in Scotland, but Glenfiddich saw it as an opportunity. It was one of only six distilleries still operational by the time repeal rolled around, but its management actually increased production during the period. This meant Glenfiddich was uniquely placed to meet increased demand after the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, cementing its reputation in the US. Glenfiddich continued with this robust response. When the whisky industry was in the doldrums in the 1960s and '70s, the company successfully expanded production again and began a series of advertising campaigns actively marketing the whisky as a single malt, in its famous triangular bottle. Today, Glenfiddich's is sold in approximately 180 different countries. The distillery has an extensive on-site infrastructure that includes its own coppersmiths and a dedicated cooperage. The 32 stills can produce 13 million liters of spirit a year, making Glenfiddich the largest distillery in Scotland. The range of whiskies produced is extensive, ranging from a 10-year-old standard expression to a 50-year-old version that sells for more than $20,000 a bottle. Maturation is carried out in various casks, including barrels previously used for storing bourbon, sherry and rum. The house style tends toward the lighter end of the scale, with spicy, nutty characteristics. Glenfiddich's parent company, William Grant & Sons, also owns the Balvenie distillery, as well as the Grant's blend, Hendrick's Gin and Drambuie liqueur.
