Distillery: Wild Turkey Bourbon

Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit is a single barrel bourbon, which means no two barrels will be exactly alike. First released in 1994, it is said to be the second single barrel bourbon to hit the market after Blanton’s. Single barrels are selected by Jimmy and Eddie Russell, and in some cases offered as private selection barrels that were pre-selected by the Russells for inclusion in the single barrel selection program.

Kentucky Spirit B-4 Tasting Notes

Nose: A mix of spice and sweet scents introduce the sip with satisfying intensity. Equal parts rye and cinnamon spice combine against a base of caramel, honey, and citrus to form a balanced aroma.

Palate: Full-bodied and surprisingly rich even for its 101 proof, the sip lands with a splash of rye spice. As you roll the bourbon around in your mouth, leather, tobacco, a hint of pecan, and sweet caramel eclipse the rye spice, transitioning to more sweet and savory flavors. Aged oak and honey mingle in, along with a bit of cornbread on the backend.

Finish: Spice initially pulls back into the mix, and takes a foothold that lasts throughout the long finish.

Distillery Information

Wild Turkey Bourbon is a popular brand of Bourbon whiskey distilled at Tyrone, near Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. There are several aspects of production that help create Wild Turkey's hallmark rich, oaky style. Wild Turkey uses a slightly lower proportion of corn whiskey against small grain whiskey, and an absence of wheat is considered to give more body and flavor. The white spirits go into the barrel at an unusually low proof of around 110 (55 percent abv) and are then bottled for the principal release at 101 degrees (50.5 percent). This is considered to limit the loss of flavor while the spirit is in the barrel. As well as the core 101 Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Wild Turkey also produces 81 Proof (formerly 80 Proof), the single-barrel Kentucky Spirit and the Russell's Reserve range. Other collections in the portfolio include rye whiskeys, spiced liqueurs and various limited editions. The distillery was built in 1869 by the Ripy brothers, whose family owned it until 1952. The company was bought from Pernod Ricard in 2009 by the Campari Group, who have invested heavily in a new visitor center and packaging unit as well as doubling the distillery capacity.
