Size: 700ML
Proof: 92 (46%ABV)
Origin: Wales
Distillery: Penderyn
The 12th instalment in Penderyn's Icons of Wales series celebrates the copper-coated history of Swansea! It's reported that from 1720, 50% of the world's copper and 90% of the UK's copper was smelted in the area, and thus it became known as 'Copperopolis'. This Welsh single malt was treated to a finish in sweet red wine casks for a rich, fruity profile, supported by balanced oak and spice. Penderyn opened its third Welsh distillery in Swansea in 2023, housed in the powerhouse of the old copperworks building, which makes this release very fitting indeed.
Penderyn Copperopolis (Icons of Wales) Single Malt Welsh Whisky | 700ML Tasting Notes
Nose: Silky sweet layers of runny honey, plump raisins, and figs, with gentle woody spice cushioned by luscious caramel.
Palate: The palate is an explosion of delicate flavors, nice and delightful mouthfeel.
Finish: Zesty notes of candied orange, jammy cherries dipped in dark chocolate, drying oak, a touch of ginger warmth.
Distillery Information
Penderyn is a Welsh distillery and whisky brand, known for its award-winning single malt whisky. The Penderyn distillery is located in the Brecon Beacons National Park, in the historic village of Penderyn. It's whisky is made using the traditional pot still method, and is matured in ex-bourbon barrels. Penderyn also produces a peated single malt whisky, which is matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in Islay peated whisky barrels. Penderyn has won numerous awards for its whiskies, including Gold medals at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, and the World Whisky Awards. There is some evidence that the Welsh practised distillation as early as the fourth century. Allegedly, Reaullt Hir distilled on Bardsey Island around this time. The early drink was distilled from barley, yeast and honey. The Welsh Whisky Company was founded in 1998 and the first spirit ran from the stills of the Penderyn Distillery in September of 2000. The locality is rather beautiful, sitting in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The first whisky was launched on St David’s Day, 1st March 2004. The wash is brought in from S A Brain & Co, a beer brewer. The standard bottling is matured in Evan Williams and Jack Daniel’s whiskey casks and finished in Madeira casks. There have been more recent releases, a Sherry Wood and a peated offering. In June of 2008 a visitor centre was opened by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. The distillery also produces a liqueur, vodka and gin. Penderyn continues to grow. In 2014, an expansion to the distillery was put in motion, with a pair of pot stills, a copper pot still and mashing facilities being commissioned. Two new distilleries are opening soon, one in the north and one in Swansea in the south, and it has begun to make serious inroads into the export market – having recently gone into China, Japan, Russia and the US.
