"The Picon distillery story began with Gaétan Picon, a French soldier stationed in Algeria in the 1830s, who created a bitter orange-flavored liqueur to make the taste of malaria-preventing quinine more palatable. He experimented by combining cinchona, gentian, and dried orange peel, sweetening it with caramel, and initially calling it "Amer African" before establishing distilleries in North Africa and eventually returning to France in 1872 to open a distillery in Marseille and officially launch his product as "Amer Picon"."
