Size: 750ML

Proof: 113.4 (56.7% ABV)

Age: 23 Year

Origin: Scotland

Distillery: Glenrothes Distillery

It is rare to see a whisky this old from the famed Glenrothes distillery, let alone one drawn from a single cask and bottled at its natural proof. It is even rarer to find it available at anywhere near this price. The nose here may remind of a Bourbon, or at least splitting the difference between Bourbon and Scotch, with oak and caramel notes riding on malt instead of corn. The palate focuses on depth, rather than breadth, digging deep into a malt-driven profile and showing just how much there is to be explored within what malt has to offer. But it is the finish where the flavors really expose themselves, with a robust complexity evolving over a long period. That finish certainly takes the Glenrothes experience to the next level.

Signatory Single Cask Glenrothes 23 Year Old (Cask #10278) Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose is old and classic. Oak and old wood lead the way. Curiously it actually smells quite a bit like old Bourbon with its wood plus caramel and vanilla. There's also warm toast, a range of spices, and decadent lemon meringue.

Palate: The palate is an exploration of malt. It is rich, but not sweet, and digs deep into that profile. There are elements of straw or hay. And in the backdrop, a gentle sprinkling of sweet baking spices.

Finish: The finish progresses into a smoothed out, more complex Bourbony finish: first a combination of nougat and nuts, while adopting an imminently chewy character. Next, it turns fruity sweet, like apricots with a dollop of vanilla cream. As the finish dies out, it takes on a slightly bitter, astringent, tannic feel, mostly oak-led, which beautifully contrasts the sweetness that had preceded.
