"The Weller distillery story centers on William Larue Weller (born 1825), a Kentucky whiskey merchant who pioneered wheated bourbon by swapping rye for wheat, creating a softer, sweeter spirit sold by his company, W.L. Weller & Sons. Later, Pappy Van Winkle, a former Weller salesman, bought the company and merged it to form the famous Stitzel-Weller Distillery in 1935, continuing the wheated tradition and creating legendary bourbons, though the distillery itself closed its production in the '90s, now existing as a historic site and brand under Diageo."
