      Producer Information

Macán is a well-regarded wine producer based just east of the town of Samaniego in the Rioja Alavesa region of northeastern Spain. A joint venture established by Vega-Sicilia and Benjamin de Rothschild, Macán produces a small range of labels based solely on the Tempranillo variety. Two wines are produced under the Macán label, preserving (in the words of Vega-Sicilia) "the Bordeaux tradition to produce a first and second wine". Both are 100 percent Tempranillo with Macán the "grand vin" and Macán Clásico the second wine. The first wines under the two labels were produced in 2009 with the winery constructed in 2016. Over the years, the project has acquired vineyard plots across Rioja Alta and Alavesa and vineyard holdings now total around 120 hectares, predominantly around San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta, some 10km (six miles) east of the winery. After ferment, the wines are aged in French oak barrels (the majority are new oak with the remainder one year-old) and in tank. The wines are aged for around 15 months prior to blending and bottling.
