Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The ouillé white 2021 La Bardette Chardonnay, from their single-vineyard range called Las Parcelles Rares, mentions Jura Sud Revermont on the front label, and it was produced from a massal selection of Chardonnay planted in 1947 on colorful clays on Bathonian limestone base soils at 250 meters in altitude and with a west exposure. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in topped-up 228-liter oak barrels without flor for 21 months. It has an expressive nose, denoting the cold year, with floral notes, and it's herbal, spicy and saline. It has moderate ripeness and 12.5% alcohol, keeping a pH of 3.1 and 5.98 grams of acidity. It has tension and a vibrant palate, with marked and pungent flavors and a tasty and clearly salty finish that makes you salivate. The oak is neatly integrated. There is volatile acidity (0.62 grams) and sulfur dioxide, less than six milligrams per liter and a total of 11 milligrams per liter.
Producer Information
Domaine Labet is a well-regarded producer based in the town of Rotalier in the Jura wine region of central eastern France. Labet makes a range of labels (and wine styles) from local grape varieties including Savagnin, Chardonnay and Poulsard. The domaine covers a total of 13 hectares (32 acres) spread across numerous plots in the area around Rotalier, in a subregion of the Jura known as the Sud-Revermont, best known for its white wines. Although now associated with Julien (and siblings Charline and Romain) Labet, the domaine was established by their parents Alain and Josie Labet in 1974. Initially, Julien went off on his own in 2003, producing wines under his name with three hectares (7.5 acres) of organically-farmed vines, also around Rotalier. However, with the retirement of their parents, the siblings subsequently united the two estates and now work together. All vineyards are farmed organically and the wines are made with minimal intervention and all fermented with indigenous yeasts. The Labet range covers a number of wines, predominantly white, including ouillé (where the barrel is topped during aging – somewhat contrary to the Jurassian approach of leaving barrels untopped to develop a film of yeast, or flor, as in vin jaune) and "vin de voile" wines (aged under flor). These are mostly made from the local mainstays of Chardonnay and Savagnin (and occasionally blends thereof). A Crémant du Jura is also produced, as is a Macvin du Jura, a Marc du Jura (an eau-de-vie) and a red from Poulsard. The domaine should not be confused with Domaine Pierre Labet and/or François Labet (of Château de la Tour in Vougeot) in Burgundy.
