Producer Information
Leeuwin Estate is one of the five founding wineries in the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia. The estate is most famous for its Art Series wine range of varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay amoungst others. The property was a cattle ranch until 1972 when Napa Valley's Robert Mondavi visited Australia and saw the potential the property had for growing grapes. He convinced owners Denis and Tricia Horgan to make the investment, and they planted their land to 50 hectares (120 acres) of vines. The first vintage was released in 1979, and the winery became instantly famous when Decanter Magazine gave the 1980 Art Series Chardonnay its highest rating. Thhe Art Series also includes Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc as well as a Bordeaux-inspired Semillon and Sauvignon blend for which Margaret River is reputable for. Each vintage, an Australian artist is commissioned to design the labels. The estate also produces a line-up of wines under their Prelude Vineyards and Siblings labels, which are more fruit-forward and accessible in their youth.
