Producer Information
Michel Autran is a standout winemaker based in Noizay, in the Vouvray region of the Loire Valley. Formerly an emergency room doctor, he transitioned to wine in 2011 after training with top Chenin Blanc producers like François Pinon and Frantz Saumon. His small estate covers about 3.8 hectares of organically farmed, old-vine Chenin Blanc on classic Vouvray soils—flinty clay and clay-limestone. Autran works without certification but follows strict organic and biodynamic principles, including horse ploughing and manual harvests. His wines are fermented with native yeasts, aged in neutral barrels and tanks for up to two years, and bottled with little or no added sulfur. He focuses exclusively on dry Chenin, an unusual choice in Vouvray, aiming to express pure, vibrant, terroir-driven wines. His two main cuvées—Les Enfers Tranquilles and Ciel Rouge—offer distinct expressions of site and soil, both highly regarded for their precision, texture, and depth. Since 2017, he has bottled his wines as Vin de France, stepping outside the Vouvray AOC to preserve creative freedom. Today, Michel Autran is seen as a key figure in the new wave of Loire producers bringing fresh vision to traditional terroir.
